St.Stephen's

A short distance from Helmshore is the picturesque Grane Valley an area of outstanding beauty, well within walking distance.

The area consists of three reservoirs; Holden Wood, Ogden and Calf Hey.

The Construction of the Ogden Reservoir in 1912 led to the end of village life for the Grane village. At one time the population had numbered 1,300.The inhabitants were served by a church, Methodist Chapel, three mills and a school. Employment consisted of mill work. Quarrying, and a brick works also provided employment over the years. There had also existed a thriving illicit Whisky distillation industry; despite the authorities attempts to eradicate it. The people of the village were absorbed into the surrounding areas, they even moved St.Stephen's Church stone by stone to a new location nearer to Haslingden
