St Stephen's Walking Day in 1954;led by the
Rev.Fred Bamber,(later St James's vicar and then Canon Bamber)
accompanied by Church Wardens Ron Haworth (on the right of picture) and
Jack Hartley. I'm pleased to report that Ron is still with us and living
in Helmshore.
This photograph shows the Haslingden/Helmshore
Home Guard in 1940.The men used to guard local strategic sites, such as
the Grane Reservoirs. Many of the men were former First World War
servicemen, but some including my own father were awaiting call up. He
subsequently went on to serve in the Royal Marines with HMS SHROPSHIRE
and HMS AJAX.
