I am a
local artist, living and painting in Helmshore.
I have always been interested in drawing and painting since I was young and
I went to Art College in the Sixties for 2 years.
While I was growing up and raising a family (now grown up) and working I would do occasional paintings and drawings, mainly on holiday. It is only recently though that I've been able to devote much more time to painting and I work mainly in watercolours and also keep an illustrated journal.
The
fluidity and immediacy of watercolour appeals to my style of working and I
like its unpredictability although sometimes this doesn't always work out
how you envisaged.
My aim is to capture the essence of a place, landscape or person but not
reproduce it exactly. I work mainly outside from life but occasionally I
will use photographs and sketches. Drawing is very important to me and
provides the scaffold for my pictures, I try to draw and paint every day,
but I don't always manage it. I tend to paint what I like or what interests
me, hence the varied subject matter.
My recent first exhibition at The White Horse Inn in Helmshore featured
paintings from May last year, when I began to paint almost full time. They
were characterised by 'series' of pictures, The White Horse, A Touch of Red,
Life Class and Awash with Colour, examples of which you can see below. Over
70 people came to the exhibition of 44 paintings which was very encouraging
and I also sold quite a few too.
My next
project is entering some pictures at the Rossendale Artists Exhibition in
Whittaker Park to see if they will be accepted and I am also on the Reveal
Studio Trail the weekend of the 10/11 Sept. A selection of paintings also
remains at The White Horse which kindly showcases my work.
I love my life as an artist and having the opportunity to reproduce in paint
the beautiful area where I live and the many places I travel to and the
people I meet. It's wonderful to have encouragement and know that people
like your work but the important thing is to keep growing as an artist and
having new, fresh perspectives.
