William John Porritt.one of the richest men in the Helmshore area, owner of Tor Side House. His Quarries provided both the stone for workers cottages and for many of the buildings in St Anne's.1914 saw the formation of Porritt's and Spencer, the company was the worlds largest producer of papermaking felt.
Benjamin Haworth (Ben o' Rabbits) in 1890 was
Manager of Park Mill and later became sole owner. He also served as
Conservative Councillor and helped found the Helmshore Conservative
Club.
Lawrence Whittaker (Higher Mill) pictured in the
1900's.Known as Helmshore's best dressed man. In 1894 won the Helmshore ward
for the Conservatives; by one vote (having reneged on an agreement to vote
for his Liberal opponent).
